If Dad can do it, I can do it: Artisan Soap with Printable Labels

When I was a little girl, my dad started collecting the leftover fat from cooking bacon in tin cans and keeping it in the refrigerator. When he had stored up at least a couple of years worth he took the whole lot, some olive oil, and some lye, and he made soap on the kitchen stove. I, who had only ever seen soap that came from the store, thought this was pretty fantastic. Of course, it smelled like bacon, and washing your hands with it made you smell like bacon. But, he made something from nothing.

As I cruised the internet in search of appropriate hand-made crafts for men this Christmas I found this article about how to make "manly soap." Now there's a mess I'd never made! Soap. Naturally, by week's end I had stocked up on three different oils, lye, and distilled water, and set my mind to making soap.

I read a number of different blogs with a number of different methods and recipes, but decided to start with something small and low risk. The basic recipe I found on Orthogonal Thought's blog called for:

6 oz distilled water
2.25 oz lye (sodium hydroxide)
10 oz olive oil
6 oz coconut oil
1 tbl/0.45oz castor oil

So, I pulled out my food scale from a time when I used to weigh food (ugh), my thermometer from that time I tried to make beer (eek) and my protective eye wear for when I etch glass (yep), and cleared off the counters. The lye wasn't nearly as scary or dangerous as I expected. Yes, it got the water hot, but no, it didn't really seem all that hazardous. Not like melt your face off dangerous or anything. For the first batch I pulled out a big stainless steel pot to heat the oils in, but quickly realized that was complete overkill. So, for my second batch I just mixed it all up in a batter bowl and stuck it in the microwave for 2 minutes.

My poor hand blender really got a good work out getting the mixture to "trace" (the fancy soap-making word for thicken), but that may be at least in part due to the fact that I tried to mix in the (exfoliate and aromatic) coffee grounds too soon. As it turns out tracing takes about 10 minutes and they don't need to be in there at the very beginning, clogging up your blender.

Since I was aiming for low risk, I poured the soap-like concoction into empty milk cartons and wrapped them in the cat's favorite quilt for insulation while they had a "gel phase" (perhaps the whole process was worth it for the look on my cat's face when I stole her blanket to swaddle a milk carton). Two days later, voila, man soap. The whole process took about an hour (maybe less), but made for a rather impressive story.

In my second attempt I wanted something more gender neutral. So, I omitted the coffee grounds and instead included about 4 ml of cinnamon essential oil and a tablespoon of ground cinnamon. Mixed with the sweet scent of coconut oil it smelled just like eggnog.

This is what my second batch looked like when I unpeeled the milk carton from around the soap after 2 days to solidify.


This is what the man soap looked like sliced up and left on wire racks to cure for about 2 weeks. This is a double batch, by the way. The recipe makes about 5 bars of soap.  


And this is what it looked like after I printed labels on kraft paper and wrapped them around each bar. Someone even told me they looked Artisan.

Marmie and Me Panda Hats

The Giants did it again. This was our second World Series win in 3 years, and we were excited. I think it's fair to say just about everyone who lives north of San Luis Obispo was excited. Pablo Sandoval, The Panda, slammed home run after home run in the post season, and won MVP.
Just after the game that sent them to the series I got note from my Godmother with this image of a panda hat, wondering if I could make her one.
While I know that I have already made some Pablo Sandoval panda hats, I figured it wouldn't hurt to try something a little different. The problem is that I couldn't tell if she wanted one for herself (a completely appropriate request in my opinion, I wear my panda hat proudly) or if she meant that she wanted one for her darling grand girl. So, I figured the easiest solution was to make two, one for each of them.
For these caps I started with the most basic knit beanie pattern I know, starting and ending with two rows of orange. From there, I just stitched on a set of black eyes and a nose. Next, I made a pair of black ears and doubled them over and filled them with cotton balls.
For a final touch I added their names (well, Marmie is a "grandmother" name, but the spirit is there) to the back and mailed them off for Christmas!

Aunt Ellie Cake with Minty Trees

Every birthday and holiday, as I was growing up, we could count on my Aunt Ellie to show up with a spectacular cake. These weren't just your ordinary, out of the box, chocolate birthday cakes; they were fancy "from scratch" creations. Around the time my brother reached high school he developed an affinity for one cake in particular that the rest of the world would call a flourless chocolate cake. It quickly became the cake for his celebrations. As a family, we dubbed this particular delicacy "Aunt Ellie Cake."

When I was 15 and Aunt Ellie moved out of state, she gave her recipe to me so that I could keep the tradition alive around our house. After years of careful practice, the Aunt Ellie Cake is now my go-to dessert to impress friends. So, when asked to bring a dessert to a fancy holiday dinner party, I knew exactly what to make. And, because I simply don't believe in "secret family recipes" (I think food is supposed to be shared and loved), here is the recipe:

Ingredients
Cocoa powder for dusting
2 sticks butter
12oz bittersweet chocolate
6 large eggs
1 c sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla

Directions
Preheat oven to 350˚. Line the bottom of a 9" round cake pan with round of wax paper. Dust the paper with cocoa powder. Cut the butter and chocolate into small pieces and melt over a double boiler, whisking occasionally. When melted, stir in the vanilla. Remove the mixture from heat and set aside.
In another bowl, whisk the eggs and sugar together until well combined. Add a small amount of the chocolate mixture to the eggs to temper the mixture. Slowly w
hisk in the melted chocolate and butter mixture until the ingredients are thoroughly mixed, forming a batter. 

Pour the batter in the cake pan and set in a water bath. Cover tightly with foil and bake until the cake has set, about 1 hour and 15 minutes. When you touch the center your finger should come away clean. Remove the cake from the water bath and cool completely. Invert cake onto serving plate.

Of course, anyone who uses pinterest has seen the image of the little chocolate trees on a cake. For added effect, since it was a fancy dinner party, after all, I wanted to add trees. This is where the mess of the day began...

I still had about half a bag of white chocolate mint candy melts kicking around from peppermint bark, so I microwaved them for about 2 minutes until it was good and melty, put it in a plastic bag, and tried to draw trees on waxed paper. But, even melted the candy was too thick. It broke open the side of the bag and oozed a thick green goo all over the waxed paper. I tried to salvage it by making trees with a spoon, but the result looked more like an outtake from Ghostbusters than a Christmas decoration (I may have to remember this for Halloween, instant slime).
When the ugly trees had hardened, I took a handful of them and the rest of my mint chips and tried again, this time including about a teaspoon of canola oil to loosen up the mixture after it was microwaved. That's the trick. Pretty trees in about 5 minutes. I used a little extra melted chocolate to attach the trees to the cake, and shockingly they survived the hour long drive to Long Beach with no problem.

I think Aunt Ellie will be proud.

Chalkboard Wine Glasses Gift Set


Some friends had the terrific idea this Christmas to avoid the whole "presents for everyone" debacle by doing a Secret Santa instead. Of course, we're crafty ladies, so of course, ordinary Secret Santa would not do. We needed crafty Secret Santa. The gift cannot cost more than $20 in materials, and has to be homemade.

My friend Kelly has an affinity for turquoise and chevrons. And well, I've got an affinity for wine and chalkboards. So, inspired by a little balsa wood box (yes, this whole thing started because of the little box...) I made a set of coasters with silver and turquoise chevrons on them. The real challenge here, buy the way, was that I couldn't find those cork coasters at Michael's, and they didn't have any wood coasters small enough to fit in the box. So, I had to hand made my own coasters. There was sawdust all over my apartment.

But, coasters are pretty lame gift on their own. Coasters need glasses to put on them! Back to the dollar store, of course, for wine glasses. Using the same sparkly turquoise paint that Martha Stewart claims is dishwasher safe when used on glass, I painted a chevron pattern on the glasses as well. And, taking a hint from pinterest, I decided I would dip the bases in chalkboard paint. Terrific idea, Veronica. You're so clever!

Now this was really where the wheels began to fall off of the craft wagon. First, I baked the glasses, because that's supposed to cure the sparkly paint to make it dishwasher safe. When I did this it turned green.

Then, I dipped the bases in chalkboard paint and carefully held each one for about 15 minutes (while grading papers with my other hand) to let the excess paint drip off of them. I tried a few different strategies suggested by various blogs for how to make this work. When dried them upside-down, the paint dripped up the stem. When I dried them right side up they ended up fused to the waxed paper and needed to be scraped from it with a razor blade. The best part: 2 days later and the paint was still a little mushy. So, when I tried to "prime" the chalkboard with a little chalk, it just left big gouges in the paint.

Then, I tried to put the coasters (that I had so carefully cut by hand with my Dremel to fit) back in the box. They wouldn't fit. Too much paint, I suppose. So, with a coarse sanding head on the Dremel I shaved off a bit from the inside of the box.

Essentially, nothing turned out right. Nothing. The whole project was a total mess.

Needless to say, I wrapped up the whole lot and gave it to her anyway. It's the thought that counts, right?

Christmas Ornament Wreaths

For weeks I've been eyeing those sparkly Christmas wreaths on pinterest made out of ornaments and wishing that I had the time to try my hand at making one. I had even gone so far as to start stockpiling dollar store ornaments in the crafting corner before Thanksgiving. So, when my mom and my sister came to visit last weekend, and both sat on my couch with their ipads, oooing and ahhing over the wreaths as well, it was decided. Forget going out, we were going to have a craft night.

My personal inspiration came from this shiny little number made of vintage glass ornaments from http://retrorenovation.com. Of course, I would no more use vintage glass ornaments on a wreath than I would use them for cat toys. No, the plastic balls that go for 10 cents a piece at the dollar store work fine for me.

After pretty much buying out the 99 cents only store's ornament selection, and stopping for 3 styrofoam wreaths and the biggest bag of hot glue that Micheal's sells, we set up my apartment for some serious crafting. Beers were opened, glue was flowing, and Pandora played us Christmas carols to get us in the spirit.

It took about 5 minutes of planning for us to realize that we simply didn't have enough ornaments. So, back to the dollar store for more glitter we went! My mom stayed back to read instruction from a number of different bloggers on how best to go about creating these things. Some had very methodical approaches the involved organized concentric circles of ornaments, others focused on developing "clusters" of ornaments and working around the wreath that way. We, of course, took a more free-form approach.

Armed with upwards of 300 ornaments, we dug into our projects. My sister and I started by covering the perimeter of our wreaths with the largest size ornaments, spaced about 1 inch apart, then built up and in from there. Mom started in the center, with larger ornaments around the inside of the wreath, and worked outwards from there.

A few hours, a few beers, and few burns later we took some photos and spent the rest of the evening just basking the reflected glory of how lovely they turned out.

Origami Christmas Cards

Most of my Christmas cards are finally in the mail, so after much anticipation, I finally get to write about my noble kick off to the holiday crafting season.

One night while avoiding the grading that needs to be done, I saw some directions on pinterest for origami bows. Of course, the directions were not in English. So a few hours later I had found the directions elsewhere and finally found a good use for that stack of Real Simple Magazines that I keep saying I'm going to get around to going through.
The inspiration
About 6 episodes of Big Bang Theory later, I was surrounded by beautiful origami bows. Unfortunately, what seemed like a terrific use of my old magazines had quickly turned into something else I had no use for. 
Then I had a brilliant idea. Christmas cards! I printed a holiday message on a stack of neutral colored cards from Micheal's, then played around with different ways of attaching yarn to look like a bow. In the end I wound up punching a small hole on the crease, and wrapping the front cover like a present, then affixing the bow right on top of the tiny knot on the front with a scrapbooking glue runner.
Probably the prettiest Christmas cards I've ever sent.

Bride and Groom Champagne Bottles


As the holidays roll around (yep, Target wins this one, I've given in and Halloween gets to be a part of the holidays) it's time to start attending engagement parties. That's what happens this time of year.

I know there was a time when engagement meant getting ready to move out of your parents house and into a new two-bedroom in the suburbs with your husband. In that time, people needed wedding gifts to fill up all that space. Maybe, somewhere, there are still people who do that, but I don't know any. Nope, when my friends get engaged it usually means they're either going to continue living in the tiny apartments they've been sharing with their boyfriends for a few more years, or that they've got to prepare to force all of the things that used to fill two adults' homes into one tiny apartment. Either way, the last thing that people need when they get engaged is stuff. They don't have any space for more stuff.

Instead, I took a note from my Dad's playbook (he say's the best gifts are the kinds you can drink and don't have to store) and bought a couple bottles of champagne (sorry, sparkling wine). I've seen those little outfits for wine bottles before, but they always look a little like the wine is getting married in 1989. I just couldn't do it. Too ugly.


 So, for the groom I attached a little black satin "bow tie" to a black elastic band (clean and new, that's important).


For the the bride I stacked two 9" ovals of white tulle, gathered them at one end, and attached them to the bottle with an extra wire hoop left over from my wine charms.
Fast, east, and the best part: not more stuff.

A vase with sticks glued to it


Sometimes I go to the gym. No, not as often as I should, but sometimes. And usually when I go, it's mid-morning when I know I can be there alone with just the trophy wives, weight-lifting enthusiasts, and the unemployed. I allow myself the guilty pleasure while I'm there of watching the trashy daytime talk-shows that I otherwise forgo.

There is a very good reason I don't watch these shows intended for housewives and stay-at-home moms. It is the same reason I probably never should have signed up for pinterest. I, for some reason, lack the filter that most people come equipped with that says, "Nope. That's not a good idea, that's a mess." I see a new recipe, or a new project, or something at Anthropology and think, "I should totally make that!" And, about one time in twenty, I actually do.

So, there I was on the treadmill watching Clinton Kelly do a segment on $1 DIY fall table-scape ideas and thinking: Oooo! Now, I should have known when I saw that his other ideas involved sponge painting on burlap, that this wasn't going to be cute. I should have known, if you hot-glue twigs to a vase, you're going to have a vase with twigs glued to it. But, no! I was excited about my fall craft idea right from ABC's "The Chew" to my kitchen.


Equipped with a $1 tall glass cylinder vase, sticks cut with kitchen shears off of the tree in my backyard, and a hot glue gun, I set to work. In the natural light at 2pm that day I was very underwhelmed with the result. I couldn't believe that any part of me, running or not, thought this was a good idea. But, I wrapped a little ribbon around it, stuck a scented candle in it, and tucked it in with my fall decorations anyway.

It really did photograph a lot better than I expected. I can see why it seemed like such a terrific idea when presented on TV. In artificial light, with the right camera angle, you can't see the little bits of hot glue holding on the sticks that looked so terribly tacky to me earlier.


But, I ran in to trouble when I decided to light the candle. For one reason or another it didn't occur to me that when hot glue is placed near a warm candle, it turns back into hot glue. So, I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised when I barely touched it and the whole thing fell apart. I ended up with a handful of sticks.

Rather frustrated, but now quite devoted to this stupid project, I went into The Chew website to get their official directions. It turns out that they didn't want hot glue, they wanted craft glue. Of course! I've got that.

The thing about craft glue that Clinton forgot to mention, is that it's slow drying. You can put a stick on glass with hot glue and it sticks in about 2 seconds. White glue doesn't work that way. White glue takes about an hour to dry completely.

So, I laid the vase on its side, propping it up on either side with crumpled paper towels so it couldn't roll away, and glued on a stick. One stick. At the only spot on the vase where it could balance. Then, I responded to few dozen emails. When it was dry I rolled the vase about an inch and attached one more stick. Then, I washed some dishes and swept the kitchen, took out the trash, and made a phone call. When it was finally dry, I rolled the vase about half an inch and attached another stick.

You can probably see where this is headed; It took 6 days. On weekdays I would attach one before work in the morning, then another when I got home, then one more before bed. In the end I would say it was 100% not worth it.


I don't know what made me think that this would turn out looking like anything other than a vase with sticks glued to it. No, scratch that. I know exactly what made me think that. Clinton Kelly told me so. I officially don't trust that gut anymore. But, I've got a vase with sticks glued to it with a candle in it! It's decorative.

Beer Cake Pops II

You may remember that last labor day I attempted beer cake pops for a party. It was a fun idea, but they turned out mediocre at best. Yet, when my mom told me that we needed a dessert for an Oktoberfest I knew what I had to do: It was time to avenge the failed beer cake pops of 2011. With unlimited resources at my disposal (Mom bars no cost when it comes to crafting), a hand made cake pop holder (thanks, Dad!) and 2 extra hands (thanks, Mom!) I would say these cake pops turned out just about perfect.

Mom's improvements upon the original design:
1. Incorporate cocoa powder into the candy coating to make the color more like real beer.
2. Affix pretzel handles after the pops have been coated. They look cleaner and the contrast is sehr schon.
3. Dipping the white coating in little white candy sprinkles give a realistic impression of foam.

Custom Dress for Goldilocks


This week Puppy Shots had its first repeat customer on esty. The dress that I made for her back in January was going to pull double duty as a "Goldilocks" costume this Halloween, but has been outgrown. So, Mama Bear contacted me and asked if I could make the dress over again in a new print and sized up.
This is exactly the kind of project I love. Could you make a dress a second time using a pattern you're already really comfortable with? And, would it be possible to go to the fabric store and find something adorable to make it out of?

I developed a few ideas then got feedback from Goldilocks herself before going ahead with this fun custom dress that should work for Halloween, and hopefully many more fun days to come!

Falling Up

It's October again. The weather has finally turned so I no longer have to hide from the heat in the air conditioned lab. The Giants are on their way to the Championship Series, so there's baseball to watch. I love the fall! Today, I even pulled out my little ceramic pumpkins and cinnamon scented candles to decorate for the season. In a moment of weakness on a trip to the fabric store for supplies for an entirely different project (you'll see tomorrow) I bought some kitschy orange taffeta to make shams for the throw pillows on my couch. It was such a quick and cheap fix, I might just start changing them for every season.

California Cupcakes


What now seems like ages ago, back when I thought that my oral exams were impending, I had 3 weddings to attend on the horizon, and I was fighting off a terrible crush, I somehow found time to do a little baking (if you've been paying attention, you probably know that a crush will do that to me).

In celebration of a friend moving to California I started researching the perfect, "Welcome to California" cupcake. Of course, I felt that in order to truly capture what Southern California has to offer in a cupcake I had to include 3 things: Beer, Citrus, and the Ocean. Something about melding the pungent citrus note of a dry-hopped IPA with the tart kick of lemon seemed like a winning combination. So, I began to look around the web for a recipie that might guide me in the right direction. That's when I found Sweet and Stout a blog devoted entirely to beer cupcakes.

Inspired and fearless as ever, I started with a yellow cake mix, but replaced the water with IPA and half the oil with 3 fresh squeezed lemons.

To tie in the ocean (because I worried that trying to add sea salt to the mix would be going overboard), I made my typical cream cheese frosting, but added a frightening amount of blue food coloring. Crushed up animal crackers made the "sand" and a candy mold I still had kicking around from my feeble attempt at wedding cakes allowed me to make some sea shells from Wilton's candy coating.

The flavor didn't pack the punch I had hoped. In future batches I think I'd use more lemon and an even more potent IPA, but the presentation was a hit.

Harry Potter House Mugs


My friend Melissa turned 25 over the weekend. Because she is perhaps the best Harry Potter fan I know (and proudest, might I add) I decided that the ultimate gift would be something connecting a healthy love of coffee with Hogwarts, where she certainly would have gone if they accepted her FASFA. I don’t know for sure which house Melissa would have been sorted into, and just one mug is no fun at all, so with very little searching (thanks to all of the other nerds on the internet, thanks guys!) I found crests for each house to put on a set of coffee mugs.

I ran off to Michael's to devise a plan to transfer a printed image onto a mug and ended up with a product called Omni-Gel (apparently it shares a name with some sort of dental product, so beware if you google it) that you can paint over an image then transfer it onto something. Also, in the Martha Stewart aisle I found some bakeable glaze that is supposed to seal and dishwasher proof decorated ceramics and glass. 


When I got home I cracked open a beer, put on a movie, and got to work on what I was sure would be the coolest birthday gift ever. The first step was to print out the images, and apply 3 coats of Omni-Gel over the top of the images, allowing each coat to dry before doing the next.
Step two was to cut out each image, leaving just small border around it, and soak it in water for about 20 minutes. Then, using fingers and/or a tea towel wipe all of the paper off of the back. This is where I really got excited! Suddenly, I had 4 very cool vinyl-like Harry Potter decals.
Using more Omni-Gel, this time like glue rather than paint, I affixed each crest to a mug. When that was try (or dry-ish) I covered the whole mug with the ceramic glaze, and left them to dry over night.

In the morning, I excitedly woke to bake the mugs and set the glaze—the final step of this labor intensive process. I have to admit I was a little nervous, so I checked the mugs after 5 minutes, and everything seemed okay. At the end of 15 minutes though, when the timer went off, I was very disappointed to find that the Omni-Gel had burnt into a dark brown sort of bubbly mess.



This, I’m somewhat certain, is the point at which sane people say, “Well, so much for that idea, I’ll just bring her a bottle of wine.” But nope, not Veronica. Out I went to the store to buy another set of mugs and start again, after all, I had 8 whole hours before the party.

So, while putting the first set of mugs though a battery of tests, (What happens in the microwave? What happens in boiling water?) I made new decals and affixed them to the new mugs, covering the whole thing again with the glaze, but not baking it this time. Instead, I just left them outside in the 100˚ Upland sunshine to cure. Now the only question is what else can I transfer with the rest of this awesome Omni-Gel?

Flower Girl Head Wreaths

I know, just when you thought that you'd gotten away from the wedding crafts and back to normal, I pull something like this. But, there is still one more adorable little craft that I was pretty proud of from last months wedding.

The bride wanted flower head wreaths on her flower girls (damn you pinterest and your big ideas). Knowing that time would be scarce the days before the wedding, but also knowing that fake flowers weren't really the aesthetic she would be going for, I fashioned these little wreaths out of dried flowers, wire, masking tape, and ribbon. 

The first step was to make a circle out of the wire. I used three lengths of light gauge wire to be sure it would be sturdy enough, leaving the end of the wire connected so that I could use a fourth length of wire to weave in the flowers as I attached them. 
Starting with the the fullest flowers (I used bleached broom bloom because it was what they had in stock) weave the flowers into the wire, tacking with small strips of masking tape at the back to affix stems. Using this same method, add any other foliage or filler flowers.

The final addition should be any focal flowers (I used yellow roses). After wrap any loose stems in the back with masking tape, I covered the tape with 1/2 inch yellow ribbon, leaving long tails for a bow.
